‘Don’t do as the Americans tell you to do, do as the Americans did’”.
Amerikanerne har i lang tid været kendt for at hjælpe de fattige lande i verden. De er gået ind for
den frie konkurrence og har presset de fattige lande til at følge deres anbefalinger om fri konkurren-
ce for at opnå rigdom og velstand. Men det er altså ikke sådan, at USA selv har opnået den rigdom
og velstand de har i dag.
Churchill & Roosevelt
Til trods for, at man realpolitisk gennemførte Hamiltons politiske anbefalinger og sidenhen har
fulgt dem gennem ”The American System”, så er retorikken også stadig den samme som fortaler for
fri handel.

I en beretning fra Franklin Roosevelt’s søn, Elliot Roosevelt, der beskriver en samtale, som foregik
inden USA gik ind i 2. Verdenskrig, mellem den daværende præsident Roosevelt og daværende
engelske premierminister, Winston Churchill. Churchill havde hårdt brug for USA’s hjælp.
Roosevelt udtalte: “Those Empire trade agreements are a case in point. It’s because of them that the
people of India and Africa, of all the colonial Near East and Far East, are still as backward as they
are”. Churchill’s neck reddened and he crouched forward “Mr. President, England does not propose
for a moment to lose its favored position among British Dominions. The trade that has made Eng-
land great shall continue, and under conditions prescribed by England’s ministers.””
Roosevelt siger altså at den Britiske model for udenlandske kolonier, som er at lade kolonierne gøre
