Abstract
Identity is self-assuredness. It is what we answer when we are asked:”Who are you?” It is what we think about ourselves, and who we think we are and how we see and understand ourselves. It is therefore important that we have the best conditions for finding out who we are, because if we don’t have good conditions, we will get confused and we basically will not know who we are. This paper is about identity formation among Latin American people. The paper investigates the Latin American people’s way of making their identity and how the way is different to people who has lived in the same country and where they come from for all their lives. With the starting point in the Mexican people who immigrates to the US, which the poem “Where you From” by Gina Valdés and the song “Frijolero” by Molotov also describes, it has come out, that the immigrants is having a hard time by finding their identity, because they are divided in two different cultures, and that makes it difficult to find your real identity and know in which of the two cultures you belong in.
When you have to find your true identity it is very important, that you know your roots. Your roots tell you where you come from, and if you don’t know your roots or where to belong, it is hard to know who you are at the moment.
The poem “Where You From” by Gina Valdés and the song “Frijolero” by Molotov both describes how it is for a Mexican man to move over the border but from two different aspects. Gina Valdés is telling about how it feels to be confused about the different cultures and in the poem the reader gets a feeling of being divided caused of the way English and Spanish are used. Molotov on the other hand describes the Americans reactions of the Mexican people and how unfair their treatment is to the Mexican. The way the song is presented gives the listener sympathy for the Mexican people.
