1. Abstract

The purpose of the following assignment is to examine how the republican candidate Donald J. Trump was able to win the recently held presidential election in the United States. Firstly, the task will give an account for the composition of Trump voters. Here, quantitative variables such as gender, ethnicity, education and income will be included. But also more complex variables such as social circumstances are to be included, meaning that also qualitative material is taken into consideration. In the account there will also be included sociological theory, where the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s theory about forms of different capitals is put into the context.

This account will be the foundation for the upcoming analysis of a Trump speech and a number of his campaign commercials. The intention with analysing the material is to characterize Trump’s ability to appeal to his composition of voters. In the analysis the assignment will make use of a number of technical terms and elements from different types of analysing models will be taken into use.

Afterwards it will be discussed, whether the success, which Trump has achieved, can be a result of a disappearing American Dream. Furthermore the discussion will include, if the success has a connection to other factors here among identity politics and Trump’s rival Hillary Clinton. Also in this part of the assignment sociological theory will be used. The account, analysis and discussion have resulted in the conclusion that Trump’s victory is a result of large proportions of voters, who have changed from voting democratic to now voting republican. This has happened mainly because of Trump’s appropriately rhetorical talents and the idea of a shattering American Dream.

I optakten til præsidentvalget vidnede størstedelen af meningsmålinger om, at modstanderen Hillary Clinton fra demokraterne var favorit til at vinde præsidentposten. Allerede i optakten til det amerikanske primærvalg, hvor Donald Trump meddelte sit præsidentkandidatur, havde valgeksperter på forhånd dømt forretningsmanden ude . Det virkede absurd, at en mand der tidligere havde medvirket i reality programmer, og samtidig bød ind med kontroversielle udtalelser omkring minoriteter skulle gå hen og stå i spidsen for republikanerne til selve præsidentvalget. Men måneders lang valgkamp er ovre, og hvad der af valgeksperter blev opfattet som en umulighed, gik alligevel i opfyldelse, da Trump vandt præsidentvalget.
